Literature and Cuisine:
Recipes, Magical Realism, and Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate

This is an Excursion: $30 (NOT included in any Conference Package).
On February 13 and 14, 2014 participants will get a chance to enjoy recipes from Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate while discussing the novel. Learn how to cook Ox-Tail Soup. Taste the exquisite flavors of Turkey Mole with Almonds and Sesame Seeds. And don’t forget deserts like Laura Esquivel’s famous Cream Fritters. It’s an event that will tantalize your senses and give you a new love for literature.
This excursion will be limited to 30 attendees. Participants will enjoy a variety of cuisine and drinks created from recipes that appear in Like Water for Chocolate. Literature professor, Dr. Nancy Dixon, will lead an in-depth discussion about magical realism, Mexican literature, and Like Water for Chocolate. Writers and cooking enthusiasts, Nathan Feuerberg and Mittie Roger will help to recreate these irresistible local dishes from the novel.
Her first book, Fortune and Misery, Sallie Rhett Roman of New Orleans: A Biographical Portrait and Selected Fiction, 1891-1920 (LSU Press 1999), won the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH) Humanities Book Award in 2000.
She has just finished, NO Lit: 200 Years of New Orleans Literature, published by Lavender Ink.
Nancy peaks Spanish and has taught literature courses in both Mexico and Spain. Her articles have appeared in several journals and anthologies, including Louisiana Literature, Mississippi Quarterly, and Songs of the Reconstructing South: Building Literary Louisiana, 1865-1945. She is currently compiling an anthology of New Orleans literature from 1803 through post-Katrina. Nancy lives in New Orleans and teaches at Dillard University.
